Today, June 25, is Global Beatles Day: “A love letter from the world to The Beatles” founded by fan Faith Cohen in 2009. The date was chosen as an homage to the Fab Four’s 1967 live performance of “All You Need Is Love” during the Our World broadcast. “The Beatles brought the world together that day,” Cohen recently told Salon. The commemoration has gained more recognition since its founding, and Apple Corps is even getting in on the celebrations this year, releasing a colorized version of that 1967 performance on YouTube: Watch it here once it drops at 12 p.m. ET.

New Museum Under the Lincoln Memorial Opens Today

Starting today, those visiting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., are not only able to walk up the steps to see the statue of the 16th president up close — they can also go underneath it.

Just in time for America’s 250th birthday, the National Park Service, in partnership with the National Park Foundation, opened a new $69 million exhibit to showcase the “undercroft,” a vaulted basement beneath the iconic monument. The once-hidden space spans 15,000 square feet and features 120 massive concrete columns that sink down to the bedrock to bolster the marble above.

Museumgoers will see immersive displays that bring the early 20th-century construction of the Lincoln Memorial to life, including a wall with graffiti from the original construction workers. Loaned, signed copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment are also on view for the next year.

“Here, history isn’t just something you read,” the National Park Foundation website reads. “The exhibits tell the story of how the memorial was built, how it has shaped Americans’ understanding of President Lincoln, and how its meaning has evolved for generations who have gathered there.” Get a glimpse into the undercroft — or if you visit in person, tickets are free (with a $1 online service fee for advance reservations).

Explorer Becomes First Person to Circumnavigate Globe by Air, Land, and Sea

In a display of tenacity and daring, a British explorer became the first person to circumnavigate the globe by air, land, and sea. Earlier this month, James Ketchell completed a 34,000-mile journey around the world in a 40-foot boat called Mindset.

The achievement is his third circumnavigation: He marked 18,000 miles by bike in 2014 and earned a Guinness World Record for the 27,600-mile venture by gyrocopter, a type of rotorcraft, in 2019. He embarked on his latest excursion last July, setting sail from the town of Gosport in Hampshire, England.

“It is really nice to be back but it still hasn’t really sunk in. The novelty of having clean clothes and lovely food certainly has not worn off yet,” Ketchell, 44, told SNWS. “It was only when I crossed the virtual finish line coming back into Gosport marina that I felt a sense of relief, like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I could finally say we did it.” Read some of his inspiring takeaways from the journey.

Iconic Punk Rock Band Is Making Merch That’s Better for the Planet

Punk rock band Social Distortion is making concert tees even cooler. Instead of manufacturing new apparel for their latest tour, the band is upcycling unsold T-shirts from other artists’ past tours.

Garments previously gathering dust at a Tennessee warehouse were broken down and spun into new yarn to create tees and hoodies — many featuring the band’s iconic skeleton logo, of course. According to Reuters, Social Distortion is the first band to take part in a larger environmental initiative from the merchandising company Bravado, which has upcycled more than 400,000 unused T-shirts so far. President and CEO Matt Young credits the idea for new-meets-old merch to Billie Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird.

We’re getting proactive, and that feels good,” said Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness (pictured). He added: “I care tremendously about our environment in the future. I have a grandson now. I want him to enjoy the same things that I enjoyed: fresh water, fresh air, green plants everywhere, and not trash everywhere.”

The superstitious behaviors of Knicks fans ran quite the gamut this playoff season. One that made headlines was the lucky orange clutch Jordyn Woods, who is engaged to Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, brought to every championship game except the one they lost. “The bag is undefeated. I want everyone in New York to know: That bag won a championship!” Towns said in a video posted by the NBA following the Game 5 victory.

Now, the Tux Clutch Mini (from Woods’ own fashion line) will be honored in its rightful place in pop culture and New York history at the Guggenheim Museum. The remaining question is: What bag will she bring next season?
