Ciao! All About Italy’s New Digital Nomad Visa

Imagine: Your “home office” is a terrace in Tuscany or a museum cafe in Florence. This scene could be your Zoom background (and we’re not talking the virtual variety), thanks to Italy’s recently launched digital nomad visa.

As of this month, the Italian government is allowing individuals who meet certain criteria to work in the country for up to a year. Other European countries that offer similar programs include Spain, Portugal, Croatia, and Greece.

“The digital nomad visa is a game changer,” Thea Duncan, whose company helps people relocate to Italy, told Afar. “It’s the best thing that’s happened to immigrating to Italy since sliced bread. It is going to make it so much easier for professionals to move to Italy.”

Wondering what makes someone a digital nomad? Per Euronews, the country defines them as a citizen of a non-EU state “who carries out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely.” Click here for the scoop on eligibility requirements and how to apply.

For the First Time, Scientists Create Single-Atom-Thick Sheets of Gold

After years of attempts, scientists have successfully created goldene: a sheet of gold only a single atom layer thick. This new material could be used in a range of applications — including carbon dioxide conversion, hydrogen production, and water purification — and might lead to “major breakthroughs,” per The Independent.

If you make a material extremely thin, something extraordinary happens,” Shun Kashiwaya, one of the scientists at Linköping University who created goldene, said in a press release. He added: “Gold is usually a metal, but if single-atom-layer thick, the gold can become a semiconductor instead.”

As to why it took so long to make, it’s been difficult thus far due to the metal’s tendency to clump up. Interestingly, researchers finally achieved the feat thanks to a century-old technique used by Japanese smiths — and a little “serendipity.”

“We had created the base material with completely different applications in mind,” said Lars Hultman, a professor of physics at the university. Meet the team and learn more about this material.

Beyoncé Is Giving Back to the Next Generation of Hairstylists

Beyoncé has been giving us a lot to talk about lately with her chart-topping album (Cowboy Carter) and new hair care line (Cécred). Another reason she’s making headlines? The multi-hyphenate is giving $500,000 to salons and cosmetology schools annually through her newly launched Cécred x BeyGOOD program.

“Hairstylists have an immense impact on the people in their chairs,” the website reads. “They create a sacred space where we can show up how we want and express ourselves through our hair. We’re honored to give back to this amazing community.”

One of the recipients is the Franklin Institute in Houston, a 109-year-old Black-owned barber and cosmetology school known for breaking barriers and making hair care a more equitable industry. The institute also happens to be in Beyoncé’s hometown — and coming full circle, it’s where her mother (pictured left) went to school.

“Every opportunity to give, first on her list is home. And so we’re super excited to have this opportunity to really make an impact that will be sustainable,” Ivy McGregor, executive director of BeyGOOD, told CBS News. “And that’s part of the goal; not just to create a ripple that is just for now, but to create something that for years and years and years to come, we can look back and say, ‘We started the fire, but the fire is still burning and the fire is still lit.’”

“Rejection is redirection”

Nicole Laeno, a high school senior from Torrance, California, shared an emotional video on TikTok of her getting rejected from UCLA: the university she dreamed about attending for years. Although it wasn’t the outcome Laeno had hoped for, the 18-year-old content creator opted to post the clip — which has since racked up over 47 million views — and is now encouraging fellow seniors going through similar experiences. “You will come to a place where you know that rejection is redirection and you will end up where you’re supposed to,” she said.
