Spring is arriving, bringing floral blooms, warmer weather, longer days — and seasonal allergies. But in this in-between time, as winter winds down and spring ramps up, it can be hard to know whether you’re experiencing symptoms of allergies or a virus. Some symptoms, like runny noses, overlap, but there are key differences to note. For example, a fever and chills point to a virus, while itchy eyes mean allergies are more likely. Read more tips from allergists and immunologists who spoke to The Washington Post.

LaGuardia Airport Named One of the Best in North America

LaGuardia Airport, with its outdated infrastructure, leaky roofs, and backed-up traffic, was the butt of New Yorkers’ jokes (and the source of their frustration) for years. But against all odds, the hub’s $8 billion transformation has completely reversed its reputation, and now it’s been named one of the top airports by the Airports Council International.

The organization recently announced that LaGuardia earned a 2023 Airport Service Quality Award for being one of the best airports in North America with 25 million to 40 million passengers per year. The award winners are broken down by size and location and based on passenger surveys (you can see the full list of them here).

Taking LaGuardia Airport from worst to best is now more than just an aspiration, it’s an accomplishment that passengers have now resoundingly recognized,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said in a press release.

With all the air travel chatter lately, we also wanted to add one more thing: Despite some recent high-profile incidents, aviation experts are assuring the public that commercial air travel, on all airlines, is still one of the safest modes of transportation.

George Gershwin’s First Complete Score, Previously Lost, Comes Back to Life

American composer and pianist George Gershwin contributed to dozens of musical productions during his prolific career in the early 20th century. But for decades, one work in particular had been missing from his catalog: La, La, Lucille.

Based on a book of the same name, La, La, Lucille was Gershwin’s first complete score, written when he was just 21. It hit Broadway in 1919, toured in the Northeast and California in the years following, and disappeared after 1926. Some songs endured, but the full sheet music was thought to be lost to history, until University of Michigan researcher Jacob Kerzner rediscovered it last summer.

“As I sifted through almost 800 pages of music, many crumbling at the edges, I gradually confirmed that these materials were indeed from the supposedly ‘lost’ show,” he said in a statement, recalling the moment he found La, La, Lucille in the Samuel French Collection at Amherst College.

In February, students at Michigan’s School of Music brought some of the recovered songs to life at a performance honoring the 100th anniversary of another one of Gershwin’s compositions, Rhapsody in Blue.

Bald Eagles Recorded Nesting in Toronto for the First Time

For the first time in recorded history, a pair of bald eagles have made Toronto, Ontario, their home. The birds’ nest was spotted by locals back in December, and now the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is declaring their presence as evidence of the improving health of the city’s ecosystem.

“For decades, we’ve invested heavily in ecological restoration work. And finally, it’s paying off,” Karen McDonald, who works for the Conservation Authority, told The Guardian. “These eagles are a testament to that: If we didn’t have healthy waters and a healthy food web, I don’t think they’d be here.

Officials have emphasized that residents should not go looking for the eagles, as any disturbance could cause them to abandon their nest (and their eggs). If all goes well, though, the couple will hopefully be raising a family in the coming months.

“It’s so easy to get really down about what’s happening in the world these days, with climate change and the non-existent winter we just had. But as someone who works in ecological restoration, I’m a naturally optimistic person. And this eagle pair is just giving me even more optimism,” said McDonald. “If people show them the respect that they deserve, I feel like they’ve got a real fighting chance here.” See more photos.
