The Kids Are Alright: Research Shows “Only Child Syndrome” Is a Myth

Whether or not you have kids, you’ve likely heard some of the common stereotypes of only children — they’re lonely, they don’t know how to share, they’re spoiled. But mounting research shows that “only child syndrome” really is just a collection of myths: On the whole, only children are no worse or better off than their counterparts with siblings.

It is the parenting approach more than the number of siblings that a child does or doesn’t have that contributes to raising a happy, well-adjusted child,” psychologist Susan Newman, who has written several books on the matter, told Good Housekeeping.

Indeed, there are unique benefits to having an only child. “Growing up an only child has made me realize how important it is to have attention from a parental figure that’s absolute,” said 17-year-old Michaela Levy. “It creates a special bond between child and parent consisting of trust and transparency.”

That’s good news for the modern parent, as more and more are choosing to be one and done these days. According to data from Pew Research Center, the percentage of moms with only one child at the end of their childbearing years doubled between 1976 and 2014.

Craving Control? Meet GLP-1 Probiotic

Are you in tune with your metabolic health? If not, Pendulum’s GLP-1 Probiotic might be for you. GLP-1, which stands for glucagon-like peptide 1, is a naturally occurring hormone in your body that gets produced every time you eat.

It plays multiple roles in metabolic health, including boosting your overall gut health and aiding with curbing cravings. (A survey of 274 consumers found that 91% experienced a decrease in overall food cravings.) And according to preclinical studies, Pendulum’s probiotic contains beneficial bacterial strains that naturally increase the hormone in your body. 27,000 Acres of Land on California’s Central Coast Will Be Protected in Perpetuity

Home to endangered species and over 250 exotic animals, a ranch in San Luis Obispo, California, will be protected in perpetuity after the land was entered into a conservation easement, blocking future development on 27,512 acres of property (an area nearly the size of San Francisco).

“Some people want to take from the land, but we are caretakers of it,” co-owner Felicia Morrison told the San Luis Obispo Tribune of Camatta Ranch, which has been in her family for over 45 years. “How you take care of your children, you take care of the land.”

The easement between Camatta Ranch and the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is the largest one the nonprofit has ever supported — and comes after the California Wildlife Conservation Board dedicated more than $10 million to preserve the area.

“It’s an incredible landscape filled with rolling hills, green grass, oak woodlands, and really important wildlife habitat,” said Land Conservancy Executive Director Kaila Dettman. “It’s really, really exciting to protect something of this scale.”

Elmo Sparks a Compassionate Mental Health Conversation With a Simple Question

Elmo is just checking in. How is everybody doing? Elmo wrote in a post shared in January on X, formerly Twitter. Months later, this seemingly simple question continues to have a significant impact, prompting an outpouring of emotional responses and garnering over 218 million views.

“Honestly Elmo. I need a hug,” one person replied. Others wrote about feeling lonely, tired, and sad. In true Elmo fashion, the beloved Sesame Street character responded with nothing but kindness, writing he’s “glad he asked.” Fast forward to earlier this week, when Good Morning America aired anchor Robin Roberts’ recent visit with Elmo to discuss the power of checking in on how people are really doing.

To offer mental health support, Elmo shared that the nonprofit Sesame Workshop started a new initiative offering well-being resources and hands-on strategies for children who feel overwhelmed. These techniques include making a calming ocean bottle, humming for 10 seconds, and coloring a “feelings garden.”

One thing’s for sure: Elmo’s question shows that although life can often feel hard for people of all ages, it can also be filled with beautiful moments of kindness and reminders that we’re never alone — especially when Sesame Street is involved.

Dan Henry Vintage Watches

Dan Henry watches are at once timeless and defined by time, no pun intended. The line was created by an avid antique collector to showcase the most striking designs of the last century and beyond. Each collection — like the 1975 pictured here — is based on a year, so each watch holds a piece of history in addition to telling the time.

Inspiring Story

The kindest kiddo

Nine-year-old Kelvin Ellis Jr. gave his only dollar to someone he thought was homeless. “I always wanted to help a homeless person, and I finally had the opportunity,” he said. Turns out, this person was Matt Busbice, a businessman from Louisiana, who just looked a little disheveled after waking up early from a fire alarm. From there, an unlikely friendship formed — and Busbice rewarded Ellis’ generosity with a sweet surprise.
