We’ve got another celestial event for you: a partial solar eclipse. In the early morning hours tomorrow, the moon will pass in front of the sun and partially block it, creating a crescent shape. Sections of the eastern U.S., Canada, Greenland, Europe, and Africa will get a front-row seat to the show — NASA’s eclipse map has the full breakdown of where (and when) it will be visible. And if you’re planning on waking up to see the eclipse, remember to take the proper safety precautions; this is a great time to pull out your eclipse glasses from last year!
Sharks Aren’t So Silent After All: In a First, Scientists Record Them Making Popping Sounds
Paul Caiger
Sharks are often thought of as quiet predators, lurking in silence while hunting for prey (cue the Jawstheme). But there’s more to these misunderstood creatures — in this case, more to hear. In a scientific first, a team of researchers recorded odd clicking noises made by 10 juvenile rig sharks, a small species found off the coast of New Zealand. The sharks made loud and extremely short popping sounds (comparable to the sound of a balloon popping) by snapping their teeth together, a new study theorizes. Beyond being a cool shark fact, the finding suggests acoustics are a bigger part of the fish’s lives than previously believed. “Sharks have sensory systems that are more refined than their hearing,” lead study author Carolin Nieder, a researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, told Live Science, adding: “But I think the original notion that we had that sound isn’t important at all is also likely not true.” The team still has questions about whether or not the sounds are unique to rig sharks. However, they could solve some longstanding mysteries about how sharks maintain social networks. “This study opens up a whole new possibility of communication via sound,” Neil Hammerschlag, the president of a nonprofit that promotes shark conservation, told CNN. Listen to the first-known recording of shark sounds (warning: you may want to turn your sound down a bit first).

Here’s Why Socks Can Help Kick Off a Good Night’s Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is all about the little things — and that might include a pair of socks, according to some sleep experts. The reasoning boils down to the idea that when your tootsies are warm, your core body temperature lowers, making it easier to drift off into dreamland. “It sounds counterintuitive, I know,” Michelle Drerup, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Cleveland Clinic, told CNN. She explained: “By making your feet warmer, you’re opening up blood vessels to help cool down the rest of the body. So increasing the blood circulation to your feet results in a lower core temperature.” In practice, a study found that young men who wore socks to bed fell asleep about eight minutes faster than those who went sock-free. They also snoozed for roughly a half-hour longer and woke up less frequently in the night. If you want a similar cooling effect sans socks, consider taking a warm (not hot) shower or bath before bedtime. “If I’m slightly increasing my core body temperature a bit just before bedtime, then there’s a bigger drop as it lowers, and that potentially helps with feeling sleepy,” Drerup said.

Halle Berry Is “a Woman Demanding More” for Those Experiencing Menopause

“I had no answers, no one to turn to.” That’s how Halle Berry felt when she first started experiencing disruptive perimenopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, and brain fog) that her doctors offered little help for, she told Time magazine. “I was floored to find the dearth of nothingness in this space — and how little doctors knew. I thought I had the best doctors I could have.” That realization drove Berry, 58, to be a voice for change — for herself, but also for all women in need of information about their menopause journeys. The actor began speaking out about what she was going through and redirected her wellness platform, Respin, to focus on catering to and advocating for women in midlife. “We’re building what I wish I’d had: a resource for women in the midst of menopause, on the cusp of it, or preparing for it,” Berry wrote on the organization’s website. “Menopause impacts over half the world’s population, yet many women are met with shame, stigma, and inadequate care. This ends today.” Learn more about the Oscar winner’s advocacy and how it led her to Capitol Hill.
