Everyone has their own criteria when it comes to choosing a place to live — some want the bustling feel of a big city; others prefer small town charm and sprawling land. But regardless of the nitty-gritty details, affordability and safety are probably top of mind for most people. Thankfully, GoBankingRates just released a list of 50 U.S. locales earning top marks in both arenas.

Ralph Lauren Unveils Opening, Closing Ceremony Uniforms for Team USA
Business Wire
Ralph Lauren is leaning on an all-American material for the upcoming Paris Olympics and Paralympics: denim. The legacy retailer unveiled its opening and closing ceremony uniforms earlier this week, marking its ninth time as the official outfitter of Team USA. The opening ceremony look, which athletes will debut July 26 uponthe start of the Summer Games, features blue jeans paired with a classic navy blazer atop a striped oxford shirt. “The directive we get is to have the athletes look like ambassadors, to have a certain sense of formality and to feel comfortable,” David Lauren, chief branding and innovation officer of Ralph Lauren, told The New York Times. The closing ceremony outfit is decidedly more novel, drawing inspiration from race car driving with a white denim moto jacket and white jeans — both featuring red and blue details, of course. Paralympic swimmer Jamal Hill took a particular liking to the ensemble. “I could wear this to an all-white party,” he said. “I bet everyone would want my outfit.” See more photos.

On Wednesday, a new law took effect in New York requiring that employers provide paid break time to moms who need to pump breast milk during the workday. The legislation also stipulates that employers must inform workers of the paid breaks and that the time must not be subtracted from preexisting paid breaks. “As New York’s first mom governor, I am fighting every day to give working parents the protections they need to keep their families strong and healthy,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald added that breastmilk contains nutrients that help babies fight viruses and bacteria, meaning the new law could help improve the health of newborns and prevent future missed days of work for parents. Indeed, studies have shown that companies with breastfeeding support programs experience a threefold return on investment through increased employee retention and productivity, health care savings, and positive public relations, Abbey Donnell previously told Nice News. Donnell founded a company, Work & Mother, that provides fully-equipped lactation suites to office buildings to help breastfeeding moms — revisit our article on her and explore the spaces.

Genetic Variant Could Help Stave Off Early-Onset Alzheimer’s, Family Study Finds
A large family in Colombia has been plagued with a genetic form of early-onset Alzheimer’s, with many members developing the disease in their 40s. But per the Associated Press, Aliria Piedrahita de Villegas defied the odds: She didn’t have any symptoms until she was in her 70s. The anomaly prompted researchers to take a deeper look at her genetic makeup, finding that Piedrahita de Villegas had a rare double copy of the APOE3 variant, previously thought to be neutral in the formation of Alzheimer’s (such is not true for other variants of the same gene: APOE4 increases risk, while APOE2 reduces it). Upon studying more of her relatives, they discovered that even having just one copy of APOE3 could potentially delay the onset of disease. Carriers of the variant in the Colombian family began showing symptoms five years later, on average, than those without APOE3 copies. “As a clinician, I am highly encouraged by our findings, as they suggest the potential for delaying cognitive decline and dementia in older individuals,” said study author Yakeel T. Quiroz, adding: “As a neuroscientist, I’m thrilled by our findings because they underscore the complex relationship between APOE and a deterministic mutation for Alzheimer’s disease, potentially paving the way for innovative treatment approaches for Alzheimer’s disease.”
