Moon Cave Near Apollo 11 Landing Site Could House Future Astronauts

As we’ve mentioned, Saturday marks the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. It’s quite timely then, that researchers just confirmed the location of a moon cave that could be a future base for lunar explorers — and it’s not far from where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed in 1969.

In a study published Monday, scientists wrote that the underground cavity, measuring at least tens of yards deep, is “a promising site for a lunar base, as it offers shelter from the harsh surface environment and could support long-term human exploration of the moon.” Co-author Lorenzo Bruzzone added in a statement: “These caves had been hypothesized for over 50 years, but this is the first time ever that we have demonstrated their existence.”

Given that we know little to nothing about what lies beneath the surface of this cave and similar ones found on the moon, the European Space Agency’s Francesco Sauro told the BBC “there are huge opportunities for discovery.” Take a look at the entrance of what may one day be a home for astronauts.

Massachusetts Hospital Pioneers At-Home Postpartum Care Program for New Moms

UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, is kicking new moms out of the hospital early — with great success. The innovative program provides postpartum women with the option to get their care at home. Patients who volunteer receive twice daily nurse visits, an armband to monitor vitals, and a tablet with 24/7 access to medical staff.

Dr. Dejah Judelson, a mom of three and vascular surgeon at UMass, said it could “revolutionize” postpartum care. She told WBZ-TV her third C-section recovery has been “so much better” than the first two thanks to being at home.

“Patients might not necessarily be ready to be separated from medical care, but they would really rather be at home. Your bed is comfier, your family is around, the food is better,” explained maternal and fetal medicine specialist Dr. Ben Hamar, adding that the program has been “fantastic.”

Hamar said it’s a win for the patients who elect to remain in the hospital, too — “If we have empty rooms, that means more staff per patient and allows us to better care for patients in the brick and mortar.”

Green Victory! Sailing Race Rewards Competitors for Environmental Impact

You can think of SailGP as akin to Formula 1, just replace cars on racetracks with boats on the ocean. But the international sailing competition, which consists of various grands prix around the globe, differs from every other sport in a major way: It awards two winning teams at the end of the season — one for being the fastest, and the other for being the most sustainable.

SailGP’s Impact League, described as the “podium for the planet,” tracks the steps teams take toward reducing their overall carbon footprint. Per NBC News, this season’s champion is the Emirates Great Britain team, which installed solar panels that powered not only its own base, but also those of other countries.

“I’d be lying if I said that it doesn’t get just as competitive as it is on the water,” team CEO Ben Ainslie said of the environmental aspect. “But at the same time we also get points for collaboration. And of course that’s the right thing to do when you’re looking at tackling issues around climate change. … Collaboration is key.
