The blazes that broke out in western Canada earlier this week made it clear that wildfire season is upon us, which means now is the time to get prepared for potentially worsening air quality. Brian G. Henning, director of the Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment at Gonzaga University, told ABC News there are simple and inexpensive ways to lessen the adverse health effects of wildfire smoke. “That whole idea of an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure is true,” he said. Check out the university’s preparedness resources, including instructions for how to make a DIY air purifier.

“We’ve Arrived”: Meet the Golden State Valkyries, WNBA’s Newest Team

We’ve recently written about the most popular baby names and the names of Punxsutawney Phil’s groundhog babies, and now we’re celebrating another name announcement: The WNBA revealed that the next team to join the league will be called the Golden State Valkyries.

Per a press release, the name originates from Norse mythology, referring to a “host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering — flying through air and sea alike.” The team, an affiliate of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, added: “This brand is Golden State’s modern interpretation of Valkyries: strong, bold, and fierce.”

The Valkyries, who will play at Chase Center in San Francisco starting next year, also shared a peek at its violet and black uniforms, featuring a V-shaped logo with the Bay Bridge tower in the shape of a sword. “It feels like we’ve arrived,” Valkyries President Jess Smith told ESPN. She continued: “To be able to put that stake in the ground and begin building the brand equity and begin bringing our community together around this, it’s a really special moment.”

How Strong Local News Coverage Benefits Infrastructure Rehabilitation

Local news outlets are essential for informing communities, keeping leaders accountable, and platforming hometown heroes. A recent study out of UCLA sought to quantify the impact of local journalists, specifically when it comes to fixing outdated and dilapidated infrastructure.

The research, published earlier this month, found that when participants read fictionalized samples of news coverage with details about nearby infrastructure maintenance requirements, they showed as much as 10% more electoral support for infrastructure spending when compared to “bare-bones reporting.” Study authors emphasized the need for more investment in small newsrooms at a time where many are suffering from budget cuts and mass layoffs.

“Local news reporting builds public support for infrastructure investments. Heat, floods, drought, and fire are putting new stress on aging and deteriorating infrastructure, which must be maintained to protect communities against these growing climate risks,” UCLA political scientist Megan Mullin said in a statement. “Our study shows that investing in facilities that improve our resilience to climate hazards requires investing in the health of local news.”
