A Simple Science-Backed Tip to Keep Arguments From Escalating

It’s part of being in a relationship: Arguments happen. Maybe they’re about dishwasher duties, weekend plans, or money, parenting, politics — you name it. While no one-size-fits-all solution can resolve every fight, researchers discovered a simple tip that requires very little effort and can go a long way: Take a five-second break. “It sounds obvious, but this is the first time anyone has experimentally demonstrated a reduction in aggression following enforced breaks,” Annah McCurry, the lead author of a recent study outlining the findings, said in a press release. She added: “It’s cheaper than couple’s therapy and can be easily integrated into everyday interactions.” For the study, researchers analyzed couples playing a competitive game via a 360-degree camera. They found that the partners tended to match each other’s aggression levels, a pattern that was disrupted when they were forced to take a short break. The results suggest that a time-out could be an effective tool for “managing the mundane, everyday arguments that couples have,” the release said. Are longer breaks better? Not necessarily. A five-second break was equally as effective as a 10- or 15-second break when it came to reducing negative emotions, showing that “even the briefest of pauses can help diffuse an argument,” McCurry shared.

Farmer Training Programs Are Helping America’s Oldest Workforce Pass the Torch
Rutgers University
From the food in our fridges to the T-shirts in our closets and medicine in our cabinets, we rely on farmers to keep us fed, clothed, and healthy. And as the global population continues to grow, the industry will need to as well. In the U.S., the median age of farmers is around 58, making them the oldest workforce in the country — so it’s essential a new generation follows in their footsteps. That’s where Rutgers University’s Beginner Farmer Training Program comes in. Comprising online classes, hands-on training, and mentorship, the program helps people with little to no prior experience break into the field. Christina Couch, 26, is one of those individuals. Having previously worked in the restaurant industry, she’s spent the past few months under the sun on a 1-acre plot of land, tending to rows of vegetables and herbs. “It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had,” Couch told CBS News. “It is really, really difficult, the physical labor and the heat of the summer, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Flying Is Safer Than Ever, MIT Study Finds

Though tragic stories of plane malfunctions and crashes naturally monopolize the news when they happen, a recent airline safety study is clear on one thing: Flying is safer than it’s ever been. According to MIT researchers, commercial flight is one of the safest methods of travel, and it “continues to get better,” study co-author Arnold Barnett said in a press release. They found the risk of a fatality from commercial air travel was 1 per every 13.7 million passenger boardings globally from 2018-2022. This marks a “significant improvement” from 1 per every 7.9 million boardings in the 2008-2017 period, and an even more notable boost from 1968-1977, when it was 1 per every 350,000 boardings. To sum it up, passengers today are about 39 times safer than in the ’60s and ’70s — and it’s likely to get even safer. “You might think there is some irreducible risk level we can’t get below,” said Barnett. “And yet, the chance of dying during an air journey keeps dropping by about 7% annually, and continues to go down by a factor of two every decade.”
Archaeologists discovered a 3,000-year-old clay figurine of an ancient goddess in Italy’s Lake Bolsena, and it appears to still hold its maker’s handprints.
A groundhog named Colonel Custard was discovered between stuffed animals in an arcade game and is now a local icon in a Pennsylvania town.
