What if we said you could ditch the advice of your parents and all the personal finance gurus out there and stop budgeting? We’ll even go so far as to note that budgeting actually isn’t that effective as a tool for saving money, according to Dana Miranda, author of the aptly titled book, You Don’t Need a Budget. Now, that doesn’t mean you should start spending with reckless abandon and ignoring bills — read five money-minded steps Miranda recommends following in place of a traditional budget.
A (Baby) Colossal Squid Was Caught on Camera for the First Time

One hundred years after the colossal squid was formally discovered and named as a species, scientists captured the first-ever footage of the animal swimming in its natural habitat. Since that initial finding in 1925, when a fisherman came upon remains inside the belly of a sperm whale, there have only been eight confirmed colossal squid sightings, and all have been postmortem, according to the Museum of New Zealand. That makes the new recording, captured by a team aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel, pretty exceptional — and to make it even better, the squid caught on camera was a baby. “It’s exciting to see the first in situ footage of a juvenile colossal and humbling to think that they have no idea that humans exist,” Kat Bolstad, one of the independent scientific experts the institute consulted to verify the footage, said in a statement. Because of its age, the squid was only about a foot long at the time the video was taken, but adult colossal squids live up to their name, growing as long as 23 feet and weighing over 1,000 pounds. The young animal also appears transparent in the footage, something that goes away with age — but little else is known about the species’ life cycle. “These unforgettable moments continue to remind us that the ocean is brimming with mysteries yet to be solved,” said Schmidt Ocean Institute Executive Director Jyotika Virmani.

Meet the Genius Who Invented Plastic That Dissolves in Water
The world produces 450 million metric tons of plastic waste each year. Microplastics are seeping into our oceans and food. They even show up in our bodies. So you can imagine how revolutionary a new kind of plastic that completely dissolves in water can be. Thatʼs exactly what Timeplast created. The company patented a water-soluble, time-programmable plastic that vanishes without harming the environment. Major players are already partnering with Timeplast for their patented technology. Now you can invest in Timeplast as they scale in their $1.3 trillion market. Become a Timeplast shareholder here.

Brisk Walking Lowers Risk of Potentially Deadly Heart Rhythm Issues, Study Finds

The next time you’re out for your daily walk, add a little extra pep in your step — your heart will thank you. A U.K. study found that brisk walking may lower the risk of potentially deadly heart rhythm issues like atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, and bradycardia. This study “is the first to explore the pathways underpinning the association between walking pace and arrhythmias, and to provide evidence that metabolic and inflammatory factors may have a role. Walking faster decreased the risk of obesity and inflammation, which, in turn, reduced the risk of arrhythmia,” said Jill Pell, a University of Glasgow professor who led the research. The findings, published online by the journal BMJ Heart, were strongest in women, people under 60, those who weren’t obese, and those with preexisting long-term conditions. The results were independent of known cardiovascular risk factors. Click here to learn the ideal walking speed, according to the researchers, and try a 15-minute brisk walking exercise.

The Property Brothers’ YouTube Series for Kids Teaches Youngins to Innovate
Builder Brothers Dream Factory
The “Property Brothers,” aka Drew and Jonathan Scott, are known for reconceptualizing countless spaces via their successful home renovation TV show. Now, they hope to imbue children with that same sense of innovation through their YouTube series, Builder Brothers Dream Factory. The series follows twin kid brothers named (you guessed it) Drew and Jonathan, who “utilize creativity and teamwork to address neighborhood challenges” with their friends. The cartoon videos, aimed at children between 4 and 7 years old, are based on the brothers’ childhood, during which they dreamed up plenty of “out-of-the-box ideas,” Drew told Parents. “Our dad used to say, ‘If someone says it can’t be done, figure out five ways to do it.’ That really motivated us and felt like a lesson we wanted to share.” Each character in the series has their own unique skills and personality, an intentional choice meant to show the value in people’s differences. Together, the members of the Factory Crew, as the gang is called, join forces to build cars, robots, and more. “Our parents always gave us the freedom to chase our ideas, no matter how wacky or over-the-top they were,” Drew said. “And now that we’re dads, we realize even more how vital it is to encourage a sense of creativity at a young age.”

The legacy of pool segregation is still felt in many Black communities across the U.S. — more than one-third of Black adults report not knowing how to swim. But the Makos Swim Team is working to change that. “If we can get everybody to learn how to swim, just that little bit, it would save so many lives,” said coach Terea Goodwin. “Swimming is life.”

A rare piece of history is on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Southern California — but not for long. The oldest-known copy of the Ten Commandments, a 2,000-year-old religious text, can only be displayed for two weeks at a time, and only every two years, due to its sensitivity to light. Watch a behind-the-scenes video of the exhibition, which will conclude April 24.
