Canceling Your Unwanted Subscriptions Just Got Easier
It’s a common marketing ploy we’ve likely all fallen victim to: You sign up for a paid subscription, maybe a gym membership or a delivery service, use it for a while, and then decide you no longer want it. But when you go to end your subscription, the cancel button is nowhere to be found. Thanks to a new rule from the Federal Trade Commission called “click to cancel,” that frustrating scavenger hunt will be no more. Companies will be required to make it just as easy for consumers to cancel a service as it was to sign up for it. Online subscriptions must be able to be canceled online, and in-person sign-ups must have an online or over the phone cancellation option. The final rule announced Tuesday, which also includes other provisions aimed at making subscription sign-ups more transparent for consumers, comes as the number of complaints regarding cancellations has been steadily increasing. So far in 2024, the FTC has received an average of nearly 70 consumer complaints per day, compared to 42 per day in 2021. “Too often, businesses make people jump through endless hoops just to cancel a subscription,” said Commission Chair Lina M. Khan. “The FTC’s rule will end these tricks and traps, saving Americans time and money.”

Calling All Coders: NASA Has a Competition for You
Do you know how to code? Or know someone who does? NASA is hosting a coding competition for its “Eclipse Megamovie” project, seeking people who can help organize images from the total solar eclipse that took place in April. The images themselves also come from a community effort. “Thanks to the efforts of over 145 citizen scientists, more than 1 terabyte of photographs were collected and are now being analyzed,” the agency explained in a press release. “These images will help scientists track disappearing jets and plumes, shedding light on how these solar events impact space weather and our understanding of the sun’s outer atmosphere.” Those interested are tasked with creating “the most accurate sorting machine that categorizes a solar eclipse photograph into a specific solar eclipse phase” and must apply by Nov. 18. In addition to contributing to science and furthering the study of space, winners will also be eligible for prizes, NASA said.

Middle Schoolers Work to Secure a Headstone for Forgotten Civil War Vet
When retired teacher Tim Archer learned that a Civil War veteran was buried in an unmarked grave near the middle school where he used to teach, he knew two people would be up for the challenge of researching the story: former students Mary McCormick and Kendall Peruzzini. The eighth graders spent their summer breakdigging into the history of Daniel Walterhouse, a Union soldier who ended up at the Orleans County Alms House, a place for the poor and infirmed, in Albion, New York. After uncovering military records and a photo showing the residents of the home, Mary and Kendall wanted to honor Walterhouse by getting a headstone for his grave. “I can infer he was a good person, I mean he helped with the Civil War, and he was obviously on the Union side, so he put a lot of work into abolishing slavery,” Mary told ABC affiliate WKBW. “I really wanted to give him a headstone, because of all he’s been through,” added Kendall. The duo has secured the support of the Orleans County Legislature in their pursuit of a headstone, and are now waiting on approval from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. “This is all wonderful, and something that when they’re my age, they will look back and find themselves in a news clip like this and be able to tell their children and grandchildren about it,” Archer said.

Money: Capitalize on Gold’s Historic Stability
Savvy investors have historically turned to gold because of the precious metal’s stability. Its value tends to stay afloat throughout uncertain economic times, which means it can help balance out your portfolio. In fact, gold’s value can actually rise as cash’s buying power goes down, meaning it’s considered a hedge against inflation. Take a look at Money’s list of top-rated Gold IRA providers, including some that offer helpful educational materials for gold-investing beginners.
