You’ve likely heard of doomscrolling, but how about dreamscrolling? Many of us have probably engaged in the concept, defined by perusing fantasy purchases (multimillion dollar homes, designer clothing, luxury vacations) that we know we’ll never buy. For most people, it’s a fun form of daydreaming, but it’s worth keeping tabs on your time online to avoid going from just scrolling to actually spending.
Ancient Roman Beach Destroyed by Vesuvius in A.D. 79 Reopens to Public
Like Pompeii, the ancient Roman city Herculaneum was destroyed by the A.D. 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the seaside locale and blocked access to its black sand shores. On Wednesday, following a multiyear reconstruction project, the beach finally reopened to the public. “The ancient beach is an extraordinary and unique place in the world,” Francesco Sirano, director of the archaeological park that the beach is now part of, said in a statement, adding that visitors can view the site from the same perspective the ancient Romans once had. Per The Guardian, Herculaneum is thought to have been a wealthier, more lavish city than Pompeii, and its former residents were much more recently uncovered, with the first victim excavations taking place in the 1980s and ’90s. Conservationists worked to return the beach to as close to how it looked before the eruption as possible. “The visitors have to go down through a tunnel … and it’s like we go back 2,000 years, and then suddenly you have the beach,” Sirano told TheWashington Post. Turning Massachusetts’ Retired Cranberry Bogs Into Biodiverse, Carbon-Storing Wetlands
Massachusetts has long been one of the top cranberry exporters in the country, with the crop first cultivated on Cape Cod over 200 years ago. But in recent years, falling prices have steered many area farmers toward other pursuits. Thankfully, some retired cranberry bogs are being given a second act. As part of a joint effort between volunteers, conservationists, and the state, at least six of the swampy areas have been transformed into natural wetlands and wildlife preserves, GoodGoodGood reports. More than 15 other former cranberry operations are currently in the pipeline for restoration as well. Wetlands are particularly good at storing carbon in their rich soil, sequestering it from the atmosphere through plant photosynthesis. They also provide habitats for a huge range of fish, birds, and other species, and can help in protecting nearby communities from flooding. The restorations are offering growers who feel uneasy about selling their land to developers a more desirable option. “Many of the smaller farmers are like fifth-generation,” former cranberry farmer Glorianna Davenport told the outlet. “And their property is what they have to pass on to their children.”

What Are “Microcommunities” — And How Can They Help Unhoused Populations Thrive?
“Microcommunities” are popping up across the country as the latest tool in tackling homelessness. In Atlanta, one parking lot has been transformed into a collection of studio apartments built in shipping containers. Dubbed The Melody, the microcommunity is the first prong of the city’s plan to build 500 rapid housing units by December 2025. “I’m just so grateful,” 61-year-old resident Cynthia Diamond told the Associated Press. “I have my own door key. I ain’t got to worry about nobody knocking on my door, telling me when to eat, sleep, or do anything. I’m going to stay here as long as the Lord allows me to stay here.” Denver’s program has helped over 1,500 homeless people move inside, with an 80% success rate of participants remaining in that housing so far. It’s an example of the housing first model, which focuses on getting individuals off the streets before tackling other things like substance use disorders and mental health issues. “Housing is a ladder. You start with the very first rung. Folks that are literally sleeping on the ground aren’t even on the first rung,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. Learn more about microcommunities and meet some of the individuals who are thriving in them.
