“Wonderful Place to Call Home”: Inside One Maryland County’s Public Housing Model

More and more, unique real estate solutions are popping up to address the housing crisis. And here’s one we just learned about: In Montgomery County, among the most populous and wealthiest areas in Maryland, an innovative model aims to ensure that lower income families have a place to call home alongside their more affluent neighbors.

To offer public housing for people of mixed income levels, the county is using a $100 million revolving fund to finance its own construction projects rather than depending on private investors or the government, NPR reports. The setup works because wealthier tenants can pay market rate rents, allowing others to pay less, and all the money goes to Montgomery’s Housing Opportunities Commission.

The first project financed by the fund opened last year, and the second is underway. Called the Hillandale Gateway, the upcoming complex will offer 463 apartments, a gym, and a pool, with units dedicated to tenants of different income levels to create a truly inclusive community.

“The people who will be living here are my seniors, my kids, my middle-aged adults, the workforce,” Chelsea Andrews, the commission’s president and executive director, told the outlet. “This is a community that will be inclusive on all economic levels but also in terms of our diverse communities. So this is going to be a wonderful place to call home.”

Scientists Develop New Neutering Vaccine for Dogs (No Cone Required)

A dog neutering vaccine was used successfully on a small Chilean terrier named Findley — marking what could be the start of something new for doggos and dog parents everywhere. Unlike typical neutering appointments that require sedation, surgery, and postoperative cone-wearing, Egalitte is a simple vaccination that blocks a hormone responsible for reproduction.

“If we have [that hormone] blocked, we don’t release gonadotropin and therefore don’t release sexual hormones and the animal is in a state of castration,” Leonardo Saenz, a veterinarian and professor at the University of Chile who developed the vaccine, explained to Reuters.

The jab is reversible, can be used on male and female pups, and costs about $54. Not to mention, it has the potential to be used on a much wider scale when compared to surgical sterilization: “An injection is a lot easier and you can vaccinate a larger number of animals if you need to do reproduction control,” Saenz said.

LeBron James and Son Bronny Make History in First NBA Game Together

“Like father, like son” is an understatement: On Sunday, LeBron James and Bronny James became the first-ever father-son duo to play in an NBA game together.

The history-making moment for the two Los Angeles Lakers went down in a preseason match against the Phoenix Suns. Bronny checked into the game at the start of the second quarter, joining his pops — or teammate, he would say — on the court for about four minutes.

“I’m always thinking about ‘That’s my dad,’ because that’s literally my dad,” he told ESPN. “So I just go out there and, when I’m playing, he’s just my teammate. That’s all I’m thinking at that point.”

As for LeBron, one of the longest-playing athletes in NBA history, the moment was out of a movie. “For a father, it means everything,” he said, adding: “We stood next to each other and I kind of looked at him, and it was just like, ‘Is this The Matrix or something?’ It just didn’t feel real.” To make the great day even better, it was also Bronny’s 20th birthday — watch them play together.

“Great community spirit”

An English town rallied together to make sure a 9-year-old boy with terminal cancer had his dream of opening a lemonade stand come true. Hundreds of locals visited Thomas for a cup of lemonade, with the line stretching around the block. “It’s just so lovely that all these people took time out of their day to come and make his dream come true.
