We know food content abounds Thanksgiving week, but if you’re not too tired of looking at recipes, this new project from Slate is a must-read. The online magazine took a deep dive into a century of American foods to compile a list of the 25 most important recipes from the last 100 years. And just like America itself, the list is a mishmash of different cuisines, traditions, and cultures, from Toll House cookies to the Caesar salad and Julia Child’s boeuf bourguignon. Dig into the piece.

Greece’s Newest Subway Doubles as an Underground Museum With Ancient Treasures

At last, after two decades of construction, Greece’s newest subway is set to open this weekend in Thessaloniki, the country’s second largest city. Wondering what took so long? Amid the construction, a treasure trove of archaeological artifacts were serendipitously stumbled upon — including ancient burial sites, a Roman road, and mosaics.

To preserve the discoveries of the past, plans changed, tunnels were bored at a greater depth, and added time and costs ensued. But from the sneak peeks we’ve gotten so far, it appears the wait was well worth it, as the transportation network is now doubling as a unique underground museum of sorts.

“This project offers a remarkable blend of the ancient and modern, integrating archaeological heritage with metro infrastructure,” Christos Staikouras, the transport and infrastructure minister, told reporters last week, per the Associated Press.

Aside from showcasing the rich collection of ancient discoveries, the 6-mile inaugural line will also feature state-of-the-art technology, such as driverless trains. And it’s expected to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, all while boosting the local economy. Check it out.

A Practice of Love You Can Extend This Holiday Season — And Always

Last June, Nice News had the pleasure of chatting with Scott Shigeoka, author of Seek: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the World. In that interview, Shigeoka shared his perspective that a curious mindset is a superpower, and laid out his DIVE Model for cultivating the characteristic.

Now, Shigeoka has brought those concepts to the TED stage in a new talk that went live yesterday. He emphasizes that curiosity is a practice of love we can extend to ourselves and others — and one that can see us through times of change and uncertainty.

“After years of research and exploration, the best idea I have seen about how we can love better is to practice curiosity,” Shigeoka explains. “Because when we do this we say: I want to understand you more. Tell me about yourself. I’m curious about you not because I want to change you, but because I want to see you in your full humanity. To care for you. To love you.”

He continues: “Curiosity is not just this intellectual tool, it’s also this heart-centered force that we can bring into our lives. And I think it’s a practice that we really need right now in our country, and in the world.” Watch Shigeoka’s TED Talk.

Playing the Long Game: NFL Pro’s Son Is Helping Young Athletes Manage Their Money

It’s been estimated that nearly 80% of pro athletes go broke after retirement. Michael Haddix Jr. understands this statistic personally, as his father — Michael Haddix Sr. — played in the NFL for eight seasons and was able to support his large family until he was cut from the Green Bay Packers. “Our lives started changing after that,” Haddix Jr. said in a statement shared with Nice News.

Having seen firsthand the financial challenges athletes face, Haddix Jr. co-founded Scout: a fintech company that offers financial education, wealth management, and a network of support to college athletes — including players at top programs like UCLA, Auburn, and more. Unlike most money management programs, which assume earners will continue earning until 60 or older, Scout is built around the understanding that retirement can come much earlier in the sports world.

Haddix Jr. explained that the money many young athletes are making could be “the most they make their whole life,” and yet “some don’t even have a bank account.” Using his past experience managing money for the likes of Steph Curry and Chris Paul, he’s committed to helping athletes set themselves up for success in the long run.

“Mountain Man”

If you need a reminder of the force of willpower, this is it. In 1959, Dashrath Manjhi’s wife fell from a mountain ridge in India and died after not being able to access care in time, as the nearest doctor was over 30 miles away. So Manjhi spent the next 22 years manually carving a path with a hammer and chisel to minimize the distance between his village and the closest hospital. Read the heroic tale — and see the path.
